The Ward Supervisor training initiative is designed to enhance the quality of supervision and management by ward supervisors in MSF-supported hospitals. It will provide tailored training to empower them to lead their wards effectively, improve patient care and address operational challenges.

The MSF Academy for Healthcare began developing this training programme in 2024, with its first implementation in an MSF project planned for 2025.

Developing the programme

Ward supervisors play a key role in ensuring quality patient care and supporting healthcare teams in hospital settings. Recognising the importance of their work, MSF identified the need for a dedicated learning programme to support them in their roles.

The MSF Academy for Healthcare conducted a training needs analysis to better understand the challenges they face and the areas where further support is needed. In response, a tailored training programme is being developed. The curriculum will reflect the ward supervisors’ responsibilities and experience, and will integrate relevant MSF training content to build on existing knowledge and practices.

Pedagogical approach

This programme will use a blended pedagogical approach:

  • Team organisational diagnostic & preparation: assessing and reinforcing the team’s organisational structure.
  • Individual competency development: online self-paced learning, interactive face-to-face and online group sessions, and practical bedside mentoring.

Expected outcomes

  • Manage time and priorities more strategically.
  • Be more physically present and actively engaged in the ward.
  • Promote a person-centered approach in all aspects of the role.
  • Take a proactive, solution-oriented approach to challenges.
  • Actively support the professional development of the team members.

The Ward Supervisor training curriculum

The curriculum is organised into 22 units that are grouped into 6 competency-based modules covering the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for ward supervision:

Module A: Introduction

Module B: Clinical supervision & management

Module C: Data & information management

Module D: Resource management

Module E: HR development & management

Module F: Collaboration & communication

Plans for implementation

A pilot implementation in an MSF project is planned for 2025. Based on the lessons learned, the programme’s curriculum and implementation strategy will be adapted and refined.
