_____________

MSF has been supporting the paediatric Hospital of Koutiala in Mali for years, and decision was taken to dispense the Basic Clinical Nursing Care programme to the hospital’s nursing staff. The initial assessments were conducted in Koutiala in October 2021. The knowledge and technical competencies of the participants were evaluated in order to establish a baseline to measure the learning outcomes of the programme once finished. The results confirmed the need for our training and gave us a clear picture of the areas to develop.

The learning activities started in Koutiala in March 2022. In May 2023, activities also began in Niono, with staff from the Paediatrics, Neonatology and Maternity services, and were later joined by staff from the Surgery services in May 2024. In 2024 the Basic Clinical Nursing Care programme and the Maternity Clinical Care programme were launched in Tenenkou.

In Koutiala, after two years of implementation, 89 participants (most of them nurses but also nursing assistants and nursing supervisors) graduated and received their diploma in 2024.

The MSF Academy is currently present in Niono with over 90 learners and in Tenenkou with 60 learners.

In Niono, 56 healthcare workers from the Paediatrics, Neonatology and Maternity services who started the BCNC in 2023 successfully completed the programme and graduated in April 2025. Fourty-one staff members from the Surgery services began the BCNC in 2024 and are currently enrolled.

In Tenenkou, in August 2024 the BCNC was launched for 39 nursing staff. The Maternity Clinical Care training programme started to be implemented as well, with the 21 participants going through the BCNC prerequisites first.
